Likely Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump's criticism of US allies such as Japan and South Korea undermines 50 years of relationship building, Labor has warned.
Opposition defence spokesman Stephen Conroy said it was concerning there were indications the Trump camp had no serious transition-to-government plan in the works five months out from election day.
"It is disappointing to see the criticism of allies and friends in the region from a possible president of the United States," he said during a National Press Club debate with Defence Minister Marise Payne on Thursday.
Senator Conroy hopes Mr Trump hires some good people who know a lot more about international relations than those advising him now.
Senator Payne said once presidential candidates were confirmed Australia would be making it clear how highly it valued its strategic relationship and alliance with the US.

"The Australian government respects the democratic processes of the United States as they do ours," she said.
Senator Conroy echoed that point.
