Queensland Speaker Peter Wellington has cleared independent MP Billy Gordon of accusations he misled parliament by claiming his child support debts were rectified.

The key crossbencher was under investigation after his former partner last month complained Mr Gordon's child support payments were in arrears by $16,024.

The controversial first-term MP resigned from the minority Labor government in March last year after telling state parliament he had put the issue of outstanding child support payments "beyond doubt".

Mr Gordon also declared he had rectified his tax affairs.

But Mr Wellington's investigation was sparked by the complaint from the ex-partner of the Cape York-based MP, whose total taxable income is more than $197,000.

In a letter to the Speaker, Mr Gordon said he hired an accountant to help rectify his tax affairs and made a private payment of $5300 to his ex-partner for child support prior to his declarations in the House.

The Cook MP said he arranged with the Child Support Agency to have his salary garnisheed to further resolve any debts "and to pay ongoing support for my children to both ex-partners".

"The amount agreed upon by all parties was based on my parliamentary salary and capacity to pay, given my other obligations," he wrote.

Both families received $2300 per fortnight, he added.

"The total amount paid since the arrangement was put in place is approximately $97,000."

Mr Gordon provided an extract of his bank account and letters from the CSA.

Mr Wellington indicated the advice resolved the matter and said it would not be referred to the Ethics Committee.

"On the evidence before me, I am satisfied that there is insufficient evidence that the Member for Cook deliberately misled the House," Mr Wellington said in a letter tabled on Tuesday.

"Indeed, the evidence before me suggests that the Member had acted to rectify his tax affairs and outstanding child support owing to the relevant ex-partner at the time the statement was made."

Mr Gordon has said the reporting of his child support debts was inaccurate.
