Cooler Christmas for southeast Qld

It's going to be a perfect Christmas Day for southeast Queensland, but the far north remains on floodwatch, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Queensland's weather forecasters are promising a cool reprieve on Christmas Day for the southeast, but the state's far north remains on flood watch.

In Brisbane Christmas temperatures are predicted to peak around 29 degrees after a scorching weekend with temperatures soaring to more than 35C.

On the Gold Coast, temperatures will range between 17C and 27C while the Sunshine Coast can expect 18C to 27C, with a partly cloudy sky and no chance of rain.

However, far north Queensland is bracing for a wet Christmas day, with more than 100mm of rain expected around Cairns.

BOM forecaster Lachlan Stoney warned the area remained on flood watch with the catchment areas still saturated rainfall from ex-tropical cyclone Owen which drenched the region.

"The catchments are still very wet and there is a potential for minor flooding," he said.

Toowoomba and the Darling Downs will sit between 13C and 28C with no chance of rain.

There will be no chance of a Christmas reprieve from drought conditions in the far west, with temperatures around Mt Isa and Queensland hovering around 40C.
