Coroner adjourns for findings in baby case

A coronial inquest into the brain injury death of a Tasmanian baby boy has heard final submissions.

A Tasmanian coroner has been left to analyse reams of evidence in the case of a baby boy who died from brain injuries and suffered numerous trauma in the lead up to his death.

Bjay Johnstone was just 45 days old when he died in hospital in November 2012.

Coroner Olivia McTaggart has been told that his injuries included a fractured skull, numerous broken ribs, a bruised face and eye damage.

Legal parties in the matter on Friday offered their final submissions before Ms McTaggart adjourned the case to a date to be confirmed when she will hand down findings.

Bjay's father Simon Adam Johnstone has been named as a person of interest in the baby's death.

The court was told on Friday he did not respond to a 140-page summary compiled by counsel assisting the coroner, Lakshmi Sundram.

"He has made no communication with myself or the coroner's office indicating that he wishes to appear today, nor that he wanted to make any submissions," Ms Sundram said.

Mr Johnstone earlier appeared at the inquest but there is a non-publication order on his evidence.

Her report detailed allegations against Mr Johnstone including that he shook and threw Bjay, pushed his head against a wall, punched him in the chest and "body slammed" him on a bed.

"I'm assuming Ms Sundram would be urging me to accept that Mr Johnstone inflicted the injuries?" Ms McTaggart asked.

"Yes," counsel assisting answered.

There was also extensive evidence presented to court about the role of child protection and emergency service agencies.

Hospital staff alerted authorities that Bjay's parents were homeless and using cannabis before he was born and their involvement continued.

Ms Sundram highlighted a "lack of information sharing" between agencies which sometimes led to Bjay's case falling through the cracks.

"They were not trying to do the wrong thing," Ms McTaggart said of the agency workers.
