The Sydney City Council's official documents have exchanged the words "European arrival" for "invasion" in Australia's settlement.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the change was as the result of a long debate on Monday night during which councillor Marcelle Hoff introduced a petition to use the words "invasion or illegal colonisation" in council's policy documents and statements.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore opposed the move which ended in a seven-to-two vote in favour of the change.
Cr Moore then appealed to a packed public gallery if they agreed, who replied with an overwhelming show of hands to the affirmative.
The new wording will apply to the council's Aboriginal policy which appears in many official documents.
