Countdown on for Wentworth nominations

Just over a week remains for candidates wishing to contest Malcolm Turnbull's Sydney seat of Wentworth to put their hands up for the October by-election.

Candidates wishing to contest Malcolm Turnbull's seat of Wentworth have just over a week left to put up their nominations, the Australian Electoral Commission has announced.

The rolls for voters living in the electorate in Sydney's eastern suburbs close next Monday with candidate nominations due by midday on September 27.

Independent Kerryn Phelps revealed on Monday she won't do any preference deals as she attempts to take the seat from the Liberals for the first time in its history.

Labor's candidate is Tamarama Surf Lifesaving Club president Tim Murray.

Former prime minister Mr Turnbull won the blue-ribbon seat with a margin of more than 17 per cent in the 2016 by-election.

The by-election for Wentworth will be held on October 20 and early voting for the Sydney seat will start on October 2.
