The attempt to topple Turkey's government was mounted by a clique within the armed forces and had been defeated, the Turkish embassy in Canberra says.
In a brief statement, the embassy said this was an attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government and had been foiled "by the Turkish people in unity and solidarity".
"It was conducted by a clique within the Armed Forces and received a well-deserved response from our nation," it said.
The embassy said the president and government were in charge.
