A teenage couple has allegedly assaulted two police officers following a domestic incident in western Sydney.

Police say a 19-year-old woman attempted to flee and run into traffic when officers tried to speak to the pair after they were seen arguing outside a Merrylands unit block on Friday night.

While restraining the woman, a 19-year-old man allegedly punched an officer in the face.

Capsicum spray was used during the scuffle.

He has been charged with assaulting police and is due to face Fairfield local court on May 24.

The woman was taken to Westmead hospital for assessment where she allegedly kicked a female officer in the leg and spat at her.

She remains in hospital and is expected to be charged once released.
