Couple winched to safety off stricken boat

A Tasmania police helicopter winched a couple to safety after their boat began taking on water and breaking up in heavy seas off the island's northeast coast.

A couple have been winched to safety in a night rescue after their boat ran aground on rocks off Tasmania's northeast coast.

The 63-year-old man and 67-year-old woman sent out a distress signal when their boat began taking on water and breaking up in heavy seas. They had struck the rocks as they were trying to find shelter a kilometre off Eddystone Point about 8.30pm on Saturday.

The Tasmania Police Westpac Rescue helicopter found the couple on rocks near the stricken vessel and winched them to safety. They were flown to St Helens where they were treated for minor injuries.
