Court hears kidnapping allegations

A Melbourne court has heard allegations of a two day kidnapping ordeal, during which three hostages allegedly had hot wax poured on them and were forced to assault each other at a property in Melbourne's western suburbs.

The alleged kidnapping was triggered by a drug deal gone wrong on New Year's Day.

Six men and a woman have faced court charged over incident.

Police told the Melbourne Magistrates Court the three men were kidnapped, after they took $13,000, but failed to hand over 1,000 ecstasy tablets in return.

They claim that the alleged rip-off triggered more than two days of torture, death threats and assaults.

Four defendants this afternoon sought bail: including two brothers, Mohi and Johdan Tamati, who are accused of menacing the hostages with a meat cleaver, and threatening to cut them up.

The only woman in the group, 27 year old Melissa Knight, who's a mother of two and the girlfriend of one of the suspects, is accused of driving one of the vehicles involved.

And 23 year old Timothy Falla is charged with supervising the hostages, while the others went out.

The bail application will continue tomorrow.

Three of the accused made no application for bail.

They've been remanded in custody and are due back in court in late March.

They include two men who police alleged in court were ring leaders of the operation: 29 year old Adam Gray and 31 year old Daniel Best, who are both accused of taking the first hostage.

Police claim various forms of torture were used to try to get money out of the hostages, including tying them up, threatening to pour acid on them and threatening to harm their families.

One hostage has a broken nose and all three suffered cuts and bruises.

Eventually, one of the hostage's relatives called police and on Monday morning they freed the hostages and arrested the suspects.

Police have opposed bail for all of the accused, saying they believe they'll interfere with witnesses and harm the freed hostages.
