Cow bolts butcher shop, police give chase

A cow has been shot dead by US police after leading them on a chase through city streets, ramming vehicles along the way.

A cow being prepared for slaughter has jumped a fence and bolted through the streets of suburban Idaho, before being shot dead by police.

Pocatello Police Chief Scott Marchand says his officers fired two shots at the 450-kilogram heifer because it posed a safety risk.

The cow escaped from a meat processing business by jumping a 1.8-metre fence on Friday afternoon.

Early in the chase, an officer shot the cow in the head but the wounded animal kept running.

The cow led police and animal control officers on a chase on foot and in vehicles through the city's north side. It rammed an animal control truck and two police cars.

The animal was eventually cornered in a residential backyard about 5 kilometres away, and was shot and killed.
