North Queensland CEO Greg Tonner has resigned in the wake of the Cowboys' lacklustre 2018 NRL season.

Tonner announced he was stepping down from his role after four seasons in charge of the Townsville club.

His reign included the club's maiden grand final victory in 2015 and last year's grand final appearance.

No reason was given for his departure though the club was under pressure after a disappointing 2018 season in which they finished 13th.

"As a born and bred North Queenslander it has been an honour and privilege to have led the Cowboys and the many talented and dedicated people working within it," Tonner said.

"I've given everything over the past three-and-a-half years and now it's time to pass on the baton to someone else."

Cowboys chief commercial officer Jeff Reibel will take on the role of acting CEO while the club searches for a permanent replacement.
