Cox, Graham impress at moguls nationals

Britt Cox has won the Australian Moguls Championships, cementing her status as the woman to beat at the Winter Olympics.

White hot Winter Olympics prospect Britt Cox has cemented her gold medal favouritism in Pyeongchang by taking out the Australian Moguls Championships in Perisher.

Like the rest of the field, Australian Cox hadn't competed since the world championships in March but she picked up where she left off by snaring yet another title.

The two-time Winter Olympian (83.93 points) had to settle for the runner's up slot on day one of the Australian and New Zealand Cup behind France's Perrine Laffont (79.25) with American Olivia Giaccio (78.32) third.

But she was back on top of the dais on Wednesday (83.93) ahead of Giaccio (82.70) and fellow Australian Jakara Anthony (81.90).

The combined results ensured the Australian championship was hers, coming after a northern hemisphere season in which she logged seven wins, the World Cup title and World Championship.

"I love having the opportunity to compete midway through the year," Cox said.

"It gives me a good opportunity to get back into comp mode."

Matt Graham, another Australian medal hope for February's Games, also won one of the two events but ceded the overall title to Canada's Mikael Kingsbury.

Graham (88.56) had been in superb form on day one of the championships, beating the sport's all-time great Kingsbury (87.53) and Laurent Dumais of Canada (81.69).

But his sixth on Wednesday and six-time World Cup champion Kingsbury's victory ensured the Canadian captured the crown.

The Australian team will have a series of domestic and international training camps before heading to Finland in November with the opening event of the World Cup season on December 9.

Moguls is the first event at the Winter Olympics, with qualifications starting on February 9.
