The family of a pilot killed when his light plane crashed in a suburban Melbourne street have thanked those who tried to save him.
Father-of-two Anthony Liddell, 50, died when his plane crashed on Scarlet Street at Mordialloc late on Friday afternoon.
"The family of Anthony would like to acknowledge the Scarlet Street residents, and the people who selflessly tried to render help at the crash site," they said in a statement issued by Victoria Police on Tuesday.
Their gratitude also went to Mr Liddell's colleagues and emergency service workers who "had to witness the horrific scene".
"The family's thoughts are with them all, and we would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts."
The single-engine Cessna 172 crashed after it tore through power lines, coming within metres of homes, and caught fire with flames reaching seven metres.
Investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau on Saturday examined the crash site.
The ATSB will examine the aircraft and its parts and investigators are also attempting to recover in-air data and air traffic control recordings.
