Mr Shorten says he's genuinely undecided about standing for the leadership, but Mr Crean thinks he has what it takes, telling ABC radio Mr Shorten understands the broader movement, understands business, has an engaging style (and) has been bold in the policy reform area.
Mr Shorten, who is a Victorian right-wing power broker who's held several senior portfolios, says he'll have to consult his family before deciding whether to run.
Acting Labor leader and NSW left winger Anthony Albanese is another possible contender, but hasn't said if he's thinking about nominating.
