Police are searching a Melbourne waterway and surrounding bushland after receiving new information about the 2011 disappearance of teenager Siriyakorn "Bung" Siriboon.

Detectives are searching the Old Joes Creek Retarding Basin in Boronia for Bung, who disappeared after leaving her house in the suburb in June 2011 on her way to school.

Deputy Commissioner Tim Cartwright said new information has led to them conducting the search.

"Puma Taskforce members are out having a search and we are using some SES volunteers to have a look at a fair-sized area down there," he told Fairfax Radio on Monday.

"We are probably going to be there for a couple of days."

Police say the search is one of a number that have been conducted by investigators.

Mr Cartwright said he could not give specifics on why the search was being conducted.

"I would say that we've searched other areas over the last couple of years looking for Bung and we are certainly very keen to get any more information we can about her disappearance," he said.

Bung left her home in Elsie Street, Boronia, around 8.30am on Thursday June 2, 2011.

The 13-year-old was seen by a neighbour a short time later in Elsie Street, walking towards Albert Avenue.

Bung did not arrive at school that day and has not been seen or heard from since.

On the second anniversary of Bung's disappearance in June her step-father Fred Pattison spoke of a missing piece in their lives.

"We still live with the hope that she is still alive and coming home and that is what we believe," he told reporters.

"The family believes that. We can't believe anything else. She is still alive. She's out there somewhere."

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter said in June there is someone out there who knows what happened to Bung.
