Crew abandon boat engulfed by fire off Tas

Four crew members have been forced to abandon their fishing vessel after it caught fire off the Tasmanian coast.

Four crew members have been forced to abandon their fishing vessel after it caught fire off Tasmania's northwest coast.

The fire started in the wheelhouse and quickly spread to the galley before authorities were notified about 5.30pm on Monday, police say.

After attempts to extinguish the fire failed, the crew used a life raft to safely make it to shore on Three Hummock Island.

All four men suffered smoke inhalation and minor injuries and were flown by helicopter to North West Regional Hospital in Burnie for assessment.

Western Marine Services officers will inspect the boat on Tuesday, but police say there are no suspicious circumstances.
