Firefighters have saved properties from a fast-burning grass fire in Canberra's northwest.

Nearly a dozen trucks and two helicopters took under an hour to extinguish the one hectare blaze in Latham on Monday night.

The out-of-control fire was heading towards a densely residential area on the fringe of Umbagong District Park as temperatures hovered in the mid-30s just before 6pm.

It was put out before reaching any houses.

"Crews will remain on scene for the next few hours, mopping up and patrolling to ensure there are no further flare-ups," ACT Fire and Rescue said in a statement.
