Cricket bats need to change: Lawson, Clark

Modern cricket bats make it too easy to hit a six and have disrupted the contest between bat and ball, according to former Test quick Geoff Lawson.

Former Test pacemen Geoff Lawson and Stuart Clark have called for cricket bats to be regulated to ensure a balanced contest between bat and ball.

Lawson cited edges in Australia's first ODI with India which went to the boundary as proof it is now too easy to hit a six.

"The balance of the game has just gone horribly in one direction," he told Sky Sports Radio.

"There needs to be some control put on just as they put on golf sticks."

With more sixes than ever flying off the bat in all forms of the game, it is only a matter of time before a player, umpire or spectator is injured, Lawson said.

"We're a couple of hits away from something serious happening."

Clark said it was important bowlers were given some protection to stop free-scoring.

"Even when you put the fielders out (batsmen) don't care anymore, they just hit them over their heads," Clark said.

"If you clear one over the rope it's actually not a good shot anymore, you've got to hit it 30 rows back."
