Channel Nine cricket commentator Mark Nicholas was complaining of stomach pain when he was taken to hospital on the first day of the Boxing Day Test.

Paramedics went to the Nine commentary box at the MCG to help Nicholas, who was not on air at the time he fell ill.

He was said to be sweating profusely and struggling when he received medical attention, but is understood to now be in a stable condition.

"During a break today, Mark Nicholas had some abdominal pains," a Nine spokesperson said.

"He has gone to hospital for appropriate checks."
