Cricket Gods offside with luckless Watson

Shane Watson suffered an embarrassing dismissal which confirmed once and for all that he is out of favour with the cricket Gods.

Out of sorts and out of luck, Shane Watson has suffered an embarrassing dismissal to continue his winter of woe.

The affable 34-year-old has endured a difficult tour of the UK and admits it's been tough to play a such a minor role.

Watson was dumped following Australia's first Test defeat and watched on as the visitors handed back the Ashes.

If Watson needed confirmation that the cricket Gods aren't done toying with him, it came in the form of Monday's luckless wicket during the Twenty20 loss to England in Cardiff.

The allrounder played onto his stumps to be out for eight, moments after a glorious cover drive had hinted at a change of fortune.

Watson looked to have executed a solid defensive stroke straight into the pitch, but looked on in horror as it spun back towards the stumps.

He haplessly swung a leg out to divert it from its path to the stumps - but the air swing was only able to cause uproarious laughter from the England team balcony as they watched replays on the big screen.

Captain Steve Smith sympathised with the two-time Allan Border medal winner.

"It was a little bit unlucky, wasn't it?" he said.

"I guess that's just the game of cricket though.

"It was a tough one for him and we had to rebuild after that."
