A one-day international cricket match between Australia and England will be the first official sporting event held at the new stadium in Perth.

Optus Stadium will host the match on January 28 and the state government expects it to be the highest-attended sporting game in WA history.

It will be the first of many cricket matches at the venue, including all Test and limited overs matches featuring England, South Africa and India.

If the Perth Scorchers secure home finals in the Big Bash League, they will also be held at the stadium following a full regular season at the WACA ground.

Scorchers bowler Mitchell Johnson says the stadium is needed and the team is excited to play there.

"Part of the reason why I signed on again to the Scorchers was to get the opportunity to play in this stadium because it is absolutely amazing," he told reporters.

"I've played at many stadiums around the world and I sort of sense the feeling of MCG-ish about it, but it will have its own feeling.

"With the crowd support that we get here in general at the WACA, bringing that here to the stadium with the volume of more people will be outstanding."

Optus Stadium features five drop-in cricket wickets, four indoor warm up wickets, 16 outdoor turf practice wickets and two dedicated player viewing rooms with direct access to the change rooms and playing surface.

Cricket Australia requires "clean venues" for all international cricket matches, meaning the stadium will be referred to as Perth Stadium in all match-related coverage, but the signage will remain the same outside the venue.

Sport Minister Mick Murray says he expects the ODI match to be a sell-out and attract tourists.

"It will be broadcast to the world, so we'll be showcasing Perth (and) we'll be showcasing Australian cricket," he said.

"We look forward to welcoming the Barmy Army to Perth for a historic, record-breaking one-day international to kick-off sport at Optus Stadium in style."
