A Queensland wildlife park owner is recovering in hospital after being attacked by a large crocodile in front of tourists.

Rob Bredl is in a serious but stable condition at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, where he was flown on Thursday after the attack.

Mr Bredl, known as the "Barefoot Bushman", was in the middle of a feeding demonstration at Bredl's Wild Farm at Bloomsbury, north of Mackay, when the 4.5-metre male reptile struck.

The 66-year-old managed to break free from the croc's jaws but suffered serious injuries to his left forearm and right leg.

Queensland Ambulance advanced care paramedic Heather Shields said Mr Bredl was "extremely lucky" to have escaped from the croc, which had been trying to drag him into the water..

Bystanders had helped stem his bleeding while paramedics rushed to the park, she said.

It's understood Mr Bredl could lose part of his hand after it was crushed in the croc's jaw.

A statement on the park's Facebook page on Thursday said he still had feeling in his hands and was in high spirits.

"As we all know Rob he is in high spirits and he would say 'Just Another Love Bite. And Get On With The Show'," the post said.
