Adelaide will be without Curtly Hampton for up to three months after the fleet-footed AFL defender underwent ankle surgery.

Hampton injured his right ankle during the Crows' 80-point thrashing of Brisbane at the Gabba in round nine.

He was rested at the weekend, when the ladder leaders smashed Fremantle by 100 points, before the club elected to put him in for an operation.

"After gathering all the available information, it was decided the best course of action for Curtly was to have surgery to repair the damage," Crows performance manager Matt Hass said.

"Unfortunately for Curtly and the club, it means he spends a significant amount of time on the sidelines."

Hampton played 51 games in four seasons for Greater Western Sydney before switching to Adelaide during the 2015 trade period.

The 24-year-old didn't play a game in 2016 as he struggled with a foot injury and this season is all but finished after nine games.
