Crows thrash Dogs in low-scoring AFL slog

Eddie Betts bagged four goals for the Crows as the Western Bulldogs slumped to one of their all-time lowest scores in a 37-point AFL loss at Adelaide Oval.

Adelaide livewire Eddie Betts has slotted four goals in a rain-soaked 37-point AFL win against the Western Bulldogs.

Betts' Friday night feats included two more specials in Adelaide's resounding 9.9 (63) to 2.14 (26) triumph at Adelaide Oval.

The Bulldogs total was equal seventh-lowest in their 93-year history.

In pouring rain Betts scored with an outrageous effort - a 50-metre left-footer on the run - for the opening goal of the game.

He later threaded a remarkable drop punt from the boundary line as the Crows defied their injury crisis to bank a sixth win of the season.

Adelaide were missing nine top-liners, including captain Taylor Walker, vice-captain Rory Sloane, All Australian Matt Crouch and Mitch McGovern.

But with Betts, Bryce Gibbs (26 disposals), Rory Laird (28 possessions) and Paul Seedsman (22 touches) taking up the slack, they made the Dogs pay for waste in attack.

The Bulldogs managed just one goal in the initial three quarters - from Lukas Webb, after a questionable free kick from a slide with Crows backman Daniel Talia.

Bulldog Jack Macrae continued his prolific ball-winning streak with a game-high 36 disposals, Luke Dahlhaus (25 possessions) and Marcus Bontempelli (28 possessions) battled gamely but the visitors will rue a sloppy opening half.

At halftime, despite leading the inside 50m count 32-21, the Dogs were 1.7 and trailed by eight points.

Adelaide sealed victory with three unanswered goals in the third quarter, including Betts' 30m boundary-line set shot, with the Dogs a meagre 1.10 at three-quarter time.

"The finish has never been a great strength of ours," Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said.

"The boys in their development are taking a little bit of time.

"We should have scored better that we did."

Betts potted two more majors in a tame final quarter, leaving the Bulldogs with a 4-5 win-loss record this season ahead of a Friday night fixture against Collingwood.

Adelaide coach Don Pyke praised the wet-weather commitment of his players, who now face a testing month: Melbourne in Alice Springs, Greater Western Sydney, Fremantle away and Hawthorn away.

"It was a really strong win," Pyke said.

"For the personnel challenges that we have had, I'm proud of the boys."
