Crusaders' McNicholl off to Wales

Johnny McNicholl's fourth season with the Crusaders will be his last after he signed a deal with Welsh club the Scarlets.

Crusaders outside back Johnny McNicholl will leave the Super Rugby franchise to join Welsh club Scarlets.

The 25-year-old winger or fullback will link with former Auckland coach Wayne Pivac at the Llanelli-based club at the end of the year after signing a two-and-a-half year deal.

"I am at a stage in my life that I would like to do some more travel while I don't have family commitments back in New Zealand, and I am so fortunate to be able to do that with my rugby career," McNicholl said.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder said McNicholl was a super talent and would be missed.

"His speed and ability to break through tackles has never been on better display than in the last couple of games," he said of McNicholl who scored a try in last week's 20-19 victory over the Western Force.

"We are loving seeing Johnny back to his best after a frustrating run with injuries.

"We will miss him but look forward to a fantastic final season with him."

The Crusaders host the Jaguares in Christchurch on Friday.
