Australia's favourite substitute fielder Mickey Edwards is set for a NSW debut, with the paceman named in the NSW 14-man squad for the domestic one-day cup.

The Manly-Warringah product became a cult hero while substituting in this year's SCG Test against Pakistan.

Edwards joked the crowd had mistaken him for former Australian quick Nathan Bracken with his long blonde locks and 198cm frame.

"I think Nath (Australian offspinner Nathan Lyon) had more fun with it than I did - I was more scared," the young quick said on Tuesday afternoon in Sydney.

The 22-year old said the fleeting taste of Test cricket had spurred him on after battling back injuries in his previous seasons.

Edwards gets his chance at state level, with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood ruled out of the start of the Blues' campaign to prepare their bodies for the Ashes.

Australia's new-ball pairing had been a huge influence on Edwards, he said.

"When they're around, it's just good to pick their brain. One thing I talk about with Josh is lengths. We'd just talk about that for hours on end."

New teammate Lyon was full of praise for the youngster.

"It was brilliant to have Mickey around the Test group last year. Obviously he's an upcoming young fast bowler and it's been brilliant to see him announced in this squad," Australia's most-prolific offspinner said.

NSW 14-MAN SQUAD:

Sean Abbott, Doug Bollinger, Harry Conway, Ed Cowan, Mickey Edwards, Ryan Gibson, Daniel Hughes, Jay Lenton, Nathan Lyon, Nic Maddinson, Arjun Nair, Peter Nevill, Kurtis Patterson, Gurinder Sandhu.
