Cut Aust ties to UK to boost trade: ARM

Republican movement chairman Peter Fitzsimons says Australia's economic interests are best served by embracing Europe with an Australian head of state.

The Australian Republican Movement says Britain's decision to leave the European Union should accelerate Australia's move to cut constitutional ties with Britain to boost trade.

ARM chairman Peter FitzSimons said that would promote Australia's strong trade relationship with the EU, our second-largest trading partner.

Australia's trade relationship with the EU was worth $83 billion in 2013-14, second only to trade with China at $160 billion.

Three-quarters of Australia's EU trade is from outside the United Kingdom.

"Australia's economic interests are best served by an Australian head of state, promoting Australian exports in growing markets. Britain is turning its back on Europe but modern Australia must embrace it," he said in a statement.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said Australia would continue to maintain a strong connection with Britain.

"But, likewise, the European Union is a significant trading bloc for Australia," she told reporters in Brisbane.

"So whatever the outcome, the Turnbull coalition has a plan to ensure Australia's economy remains strong."
