Cycling and Fox shine at AIS awards

World time trial champion Rohan Dennis spearheaded a successful night for cycling at the AIS awards, while canoeing's Fox family were also among the winners.

Cycling and the Fox family have snared many of the major AIS Sport performance awards in Sydney.

Men's cycling time trial world champion Rohan Dennis won the male athlete of the year and dominant canoeist Jessica Fox took out the women's award, further recognition for a year in which she became the most decorated female paddler of all time.

Fox's mother and coach Myriam took out the coach of the year gong.

Cycling picked up two more awards at the awards night on Thursday with the sport named high performance program of the year.

Luke Plapp was also named emerging athlete of the year, following strong efforts on the road and track.

Team of the year went to the Kookaburras men's hockey team, the Commonwealth gold medallists and Champions Trophy winners who are currently contesting the World Cup in India.

The ABC sports personality of the year was awarded to Supercars driver Craig Lowndes, who retired from full-time driving at the end of this year's championship.

Australian sport fans voted wheelchair racer Kurt Fearnley's marathon triumph and the full integration of para-sport at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games as the best sporting moment of the year.

The inaugural Sport Australia award recognising the value of sportsmanship, fair play and integrity, went to Australian Commonwealth Games 10,000m runners Celia Sullohern, Madeline Hills and Eloise Wellings, who waited at the finish line to embrace the last runner home.

Paralympic snowboarding gold medallist Simon Patmore won the para-performance of the year award after he became the first Australian to win a winter Paralympics gold medal for 16 years.
