Two-time Olympian and Australian cycling star Caroline Buchanan is recovering from multiple injuries suffered in a vehicle accident.

Cycling Australia says Buchanan was with a friend in an off-road vehicle on private property outside Canberra when the accident occurred on Saturday afternoon.

The 27-year-old has spoken positively of her recovery from a broken nose and sternum and collapsed lungs in posting a photo of her bloodied face to social media.

"I wouldn't say 2017 ended quite as planned. It's been a rough couple of days in ICU after a vehicle roll," Buchanan said on Instagram.

"I just moved to a private room and everything is moving in a positive recovery direction.

"I will keep you guys up to date as we go ... Off season just got a little more tough."

Buchanan has eight world titles in BMX and mountain biking, crashing in the final of the BMX race at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

She claimed her fifth mountain bike world title in August in the four cross discipline, a month after winning a silver medal at the BMX world championships in July.
