Italian cyclist Claudia Cretti is in a critical but stable condition in intensive care after sustaining a head injury in a crash at the Giro Rosa on Thursday.
The organisers of the women's Tour of Italy issued a medical update on Friday, with the permission of Cretti's parents.
The 21-year-old has been placed into an artificial coma after undergoing brain surgery to remove a blood clot and control her intercranial pressure. No prognosis was given.
"The patient is currently recovering in the neurological intensive care unit in a critical but stable condition," the statement read.
"She is subject to, among other procedures, specific treatments that aim to prevent secondary neurological damage, such as an artificial coma and therapeutic hypothermia."
