Cyclist dies in Byron Bay

A cyclist has died on the NSW north coast after he was hit by a utility.

A 66-year-old cyclist has died after being struck by a utility at Byron Bay on the NSW north coast.

Police say the cyclist was hit on Ewingsdale Road by a white Holden Rodeo single cab ute travelling the same way at about 8.15pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.

He sustained severe head injuries and, despite efforts of passers-by and police, died at the scene.

The driver of the ute, a 43-year-old man, stopped and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Police say he returned a negative breath test at the scene but has undergone mandatory blood and urine tests.
