Cyclone alert in northern Western Australia called off

Remnants of Tropical Cyclone Joyce are heading inland in the Pilbara region bringing heavy rain, but destructive winds are no longer expected.

Destructive winds are no longer expected in Western Australia's north as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Joyce weakens, but heavy rain and strong gusts are forecast as its remnants track southwest through the Pilbara.

Early on Saturday morning, the weather system was 80 kilometres west northwest of Marble Bar and 85 kilometres south southeast of Port Hedland, the weather bureau says.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services has given an all clear weather advice for communities between the Pardoo Roadhouse to De Grey, and inland to Marble Bar.

However rainfall totals of around 50 to 100mm are expected, and isolated falls of 100-250mm have been forecast in some parts.

It was once feared the weather system would develop into a category three cyclone and wreak havoc with winds of up to 180km/h, but they only reached 100km/h and it peaked as a category one.

It was the region's second cyclone in a fortnight after Tropical Cyclone Hilda hit the Broome area.

The closure of Port Hedland has disrupted shipments of Australia's biggest export iron ore by companies such as BHP and Fortescue.
