Tropical cyclone Blanche has crossed the Western Australian coast as a category two storm with wind gusts of up to 150 km/h.

Blanche made landfall on Monday between Wyndham and Kalumburu but is now expected to weaken as it moves further inland.

The Bureau of Meteorology said destructive winds were experienced along the coast as the storm hit but were likely to ease.

However, it said heavy rain and squalls would continue and there was the possibility of minor flooding along coastal areas because of higher than normal tides.

There have been no reports of major damage so far.

Earlier Darwin, which was under warning, was spared the worst of Blanche, with shelters set up in the city since closed.

The Top End still copped big downpours and strong winds on Sunday, including damaging gusts up to 95 km/h along the NT's Bathurst Island coasts, where a record 383mm of rain fell.

Cyclone Blanche formed as a category one system on Sunday morning south of the Tiwi Islands and has been heading southwest.
