The tropical cyclone heading towards Queensland should "do a Pistol and Boo" and bugger off, a federal Nationals MP says.

Queenslander Keith Pitt, who is in Canberra this week, urged people not to second-guess the advice from emergency authorities as the nasty cyclone draws nearer.

"This is not the time - not the time - to think you're tougher than anyone else," he told reporters on Monday.

Cyclone Debbie is predicted to be the worst storm to hit the region since Yasi six years ago.

"It's incredibly important you take the action necessary to preserve your life and property."

He wished Debbie the same fate as Johnny Depp's two Yorkshire terriers, who the Hollywood actor and his former wife snuck into the country without clearing quarantine.

"I actually hope that Cyclone Debbie does a Pistol and Boo and buggers off in a different direction," Mr Pitt said.

"However, we need to treat this in a very serious manner and certainly try and ensure we minimise damage and of course risk to life."

Debbie is tipped to cross the coast on Tuesday morning as a category 4 cyclone, with Defence, SES, police, emergency service workers and power employees already in the region.

Labor frontbencher Joel Fitzgibbon said his thoughts were with those facing the looming storm.

"We stay with them and offer any support we can give in these difficult times," he told reporters in Canberra.
