Re-formed tropical cyclone Penny has intensified into a category 2 system but continues to track away from the Queensland coast.

Re-formed tropical cyclone Penny has intensified into a category 2 system but continues to track away from the Queensland coast for now.

The Bureau of Meteorology says Penny is expected to slow down and then turn back towards the southwest over the weekend, with its trajectory next week uncertain.

The bureau says there is a risk that Penny will maintain its cyclone strength as it returns to the Queensland coast next week.
