At least 31 people have been killed and around 50,000 homes destroyed in eastern India after a cyclone tore through the region, reports say.
Surojit Kar Purkaystha, an inspector-general of police, says the cyclone struck on Tuesday night in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal state.
Srikumar Mukherjee, the civil defense minister, told AP that the cyclone struck Tuesday night in North Dinajpur and snapped telephone and electricity lines in the area.

The area is nearly 500 kilometres northeast of Calcutta, and is the capital of West Bengal.
