Cyprus service for fallen policemen

Justice Minister Michael Keenan has attended a dawn service in Cyprus to recognise three Australian police officers who died during a UN peacekeeping mission.

The three police officers who died during Australia's long-running engagement with the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus have been honoured during an Anzac Day service on the Mediterranean island nation.

Justice Minister Michael Keenan attended a dawn service at Wayne's Keep on Tuesday to recognise Inspector Mark Hackett (NSW), Sergeants Llewllyn Thomas (South Australia) and Ian Ward (NSW).

Sergeant Ward had only been in Cyprus for five days in 1974 when his vehicle hit a land mine while on a humanitarian mission for the UN force.

In the past 18 months, the UN had made great efforts to recover Sgt Ward's vehicle, including a 44-day manual land mine clearance, Mr Keenan said.

More than 1600 Australian police officers have served with the peacekeeping force in the past 53 years.

The final Australian Federal Police officers will be withdrawn in June.
