Czech Republic win Fed Cup over France

An immense performance from Barbora Strycova on the final day of action has seen the Czech Republic retain the Fed Cup.

The Czech Republic defeated hosts France 3-2 to win their fifth Fed Cup title in six years and 10th overall.

Karolina Pliskova and Barbora Strycova downed Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia 7-5 7-5 in the doubles to hand the visitors the decisive rubber in Strasbourg on Sunday (Monday AEDT).

"It's a wonderful day. It was not easy that's why we are so happy," said Pliskova.

Earlier an inspired Strycova beat Alize Cornet 6-2 7-6 (7-4) to put the Czech Republic level at 2-2 and send the Fed Cup final into a doubles decider.

Strycova raced through the opening set and rallied from 4-1 down in the second to keep alive her team's hopes alive.

Strycova and Cornet were subbed in for Mladenovic and Petra Kvitova respectively after Garcia had put France won match away from the title with an impressive 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory over world No.6 Pliskova.

The world No.23 had already earned Amelie Mauresmo's team their first point against double Wimbledon champion Kvitova after Pliskova opened the tie with an epic win against Mladenovic on Saturday.

Garcia almost foreshadowed that the tie would go down to the doubles after her win.

"It was a good match. We knew we had to play our best tennis. We're 2-1 up but it's not over yet," Garcia said.

The Czechs have a rich history in the tournament and won five titles as Czechoslovakia in the 1970s and 80s before dominating the competition in recent years.
