Da Silva-Fick wins Open girls' match

Sydney teenagers Gabriella Da Silva-Fick and Seone Mendez are through to the second round of the Australian Open girls' competition.

Sydney teenager Gabriella Da Silva-Fick has made a winning start in the Australian Open juniors competition.

The 16-year-old cruised to a 6-3 6-1 win over 12th-seeded American Caty McNally on Saturday to book her spot in the girls' second round.

Da Silva Fick, the under-16s champion at last year's Australian Championships, will be joined by fellow Sydneysider Seone Mendez, who accounted for American Jimena Rodriques-Benito in straight sets.

Ivana Popovic, Lisa Mays and Baijing Lin are the remaining locals who will compete in the first round of the girls' competition, which hasn't been won by an Australian since Siobhan Drake-Brockman in 1995.

Melbourne native Chase Ferguson and Sydney's Alexei Popyrin booked their spots in the second round of the boys' competition.

Ferguson defeated Italian Mattia Frinzi 6-2 1-6 6-1, while seventh-seed Popyrin saw off New Zealander Ajeet Rai 3-6 6-4 6-3.

But Thomas Bosancic's campaign is over after he went down to Frenchman Maxence Broville in straight sets.

Melbourne teenager Matthew Dellavedova - whose namesake cousin has made his name as a point guard in the NBA - will play his first game on Sunday, as will fellow locals Adam Walton and Moerani Bouzige.

Australians Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic, US Open winner Andy Roddick and German prodigy Alexander Zverev are among the previous winners of the boys' competition at Melbourne Park.
