Dale Wood earns V8 Supercars stripes

Brad Jones Racing believe they can threaten the V8 big guns after adding second-tier champion Dale Wood to their improving team.

The final piece in the puzzle has landed in place for Brad Jones Racing (BJR) with V8 Supercars' second-tier Dunlop Series reigning champion Dale Wood snapping up their last driver's vacancy for 2014.

Wood might not enjoy the same profile as the likes of defending champion and five-time V8 series winner Jamie Whincup but BJR team owner Jones believes that could all change this year.

Buzzing from the news that Wood will slot in for the Dick Johnson Racing-bound David Wall this year, Jones has tipped BJR to threaten the likes of Whincup's Triple Eight Holden team in 2014.

Wood's new teammates - BJR's Holden drivers Fabian Coulthard and Jason Bright - notched a total of five official wins last season along with three at the non-championship Australian Grand Prix round.

And Jones is confident of building on that number this season after recruiting the highly rated Wood to an outfit that finished behind only Triple Eight and Ford Performance Racing (FPR) in the 2013 team standings.

"I think everybody at BJR has done an amazing job and we're certainly well established in that front group now," Jones told the v8supercars.com.au website.

"It would be nice to be able to give Triple Eight and FPR a real run for the championship - and I think we're more than capable of doing that.

"Any time you finish in the top three (teams like in 2013) is a great result - for us, I couldn't be happier.

"We just need to come out of (opening round) Clipsal (500 in Adelaide from February 27) with nice, strong results and really set up our season.

"It's been tough for us in years gone past - we either almost finish in the top five or don't finish.

"But I think Triple Eight can be beaten, and I think FPR can be beaten."

As a part-time V8 driver, Wood had a total of 26 championship race starts highlighted by top-10 finishes in the 2011 Bathurst 1000 and last year's Gold Coast 600.

"This is an amazing opportunity," Wood said.

"It's a quality car and a quality team and I will have the chance to not only race against the best new talent from the development series but also against some of the most-successful, experienced drivers as well."
