Dangling crane load secured in Melbourne

A broken down crane with a load dangling above a Melbourne street has been turned around, removing the threat to the community after closing a road.

A load of construction material left dangling precariously above a central Melbourne street has been swung to safety as workers fix a broken crane which sparked a CBD shutdown.

The malfunctioning machinery on Friday caused the partial closure of Spencer Street, where it was working on a new Victoria Police building.

The road between Lonsdale Street and La Trobe Street was closed due to "emergency crane works" but has since been reopened.

WorkSafe has been called to investigate the incident, which closed the street for several hours.
