A Danish submarine inventor who was convicted of torturing and murdering a Swedish reporter after luring her onto his sub has lost his appeal against his life sentence.

Peter Madsen, 47, was sentenced to life imprisonment in April after he was convicted of the 2017 murder, sexual assault and the dismembering of 30-year-old Kim Wall.

The Copenhagen City Court had ruled unanimously that Madsen lured Wall onto his home-made submarine with the promise of an interview before carrying out the sexual assault and murder.

In Denmark, a life sentence is on average 16 years, but can be extended if necessary.

Madsen had wanted a time-limited sentence, not an open-ended prison term, but the Eastern High Court in Copenhagen on Wednesday upheld his life sentence.

Judge Jan Uffe Rasmussen said the court had reached the same conclusion as the Copenhagen City Court.

Madsen denies murdering Wall, saying she died accidentally inside the submarine, but has confessed to throwing her body parts into the Baltic Sea.
