You normally kiss a fish and throw it back.

But when the catch of the day comes with a $1 million prize tag attached, you are recommended to pucker up and hold on very tightly.

Darwin fisherman Liam Hale might not be able to claim himself a millionaire angler, but a 56-centimetre barramundi pulled out of Darwin Harbour on Friday has earned him a ready $10,000.

"We can't believe we caught one of the tagged fish; it still hasn't sunk in," Mr Hale said.

"We always go out fishing as a family and thought we'd try our luck."
Anglers in the Northern Territory can bag themselves one of 75 barramundi with a $10,000 prize tag attached - and there is one out there worth a whopping $1 million.

The money fish are part of a Million Dollar Fish tourism campaign to attract more people to the Top End during the off-peak season when tourist numbers are low.

"(The competition) will help lure more visitors to the territory in our off-peak tourism season, which coincides with one of the best times to fish for barramundi," NT Chief Minister Adam Giles said.

So grab a rod and head north and you could catch yourself a life-changing $1 million barra.
