Darwin to host night Supercar races

The NT Government and Supercars have agreed to extend their current deal to host races in Darwin until 2030, including night races from 2018.

Darwin will host the first Australian Supercars night race in more than two decades in 2018 after securing a long-term deal with the sport.

The NT Government and Supercars on Saturday agreed to keep racing at Hidden Valley Raceway until 2030, extending its current agreement by 12 years.

It includes a provision to run a night race exclusively for five years, starting from 2018.

Not since 1997 at Melbourne's Calder Park has the championship raced under lights in Australia.

NT Chief Minister Adam Giles said installing lights could cost anywhere between $2 million for temporary fixtures and $12 million-plus for permanent infrastructure, based on early analysis.

But he predicts the return on investment will be almost double current levels.

He said the agreement will still be binding even if his government isn't re-elected in August's territory poll.

"We think the night round will give us a point of difference to other circuits and events in Australia," Mr Giles said.

"It will mean that it's another opportunity for tourists and Supercar and motor racing fans to want to come up to Darwin and experience the event."

Supercars CEO James Warburton said racing under lights in the Top End will be an "extraordinary" showcase.

"It's something completely different," he said.

"You would imagine Friday and Saturday nights will be the ultimate nights to be under lights, but that will all be revealed as we get into the final planning."
