Darwin water park to boost NT jobs

Northern Territory Chief Minister Michael Gunner says a water theme park in Darwin will help boost jobs.

The Northern Territory government will look to boost tourism and create jobs with the development of an international-standard water theme park in Darwin.

The government has nominated a preferred site at Stokes Hill Wharf for the project and has called for expressions of interest from the private sector.

"My government's number one priority is creating local jobs and facilitating exciting private-sector projects like this water theme park will do that," Chief Minister Michael Gunner said on Monday.

The park could include food and retail outlets, public open space and accommodation options as well as entertainment and recreational activities.

A government-funded feasibility study conducted last year found it could be commercially attractive for the private sector to build, own and operate.

The government will also allocate a further $1.7 million to support delivery of the project.

Mr Gunner said the Darwin water theme park was part of a $100 million plan to revitalise the city's CBD and make it a "world-class tourism mecca", reflecting its status as the capital of Northern Australia.

He said talks with the federal government about matching the NT's funding were also progressing well.

"We are not waiting - we are getting on with revitalising Darwin CBD," the chief minister said.

"By investing in social and tourism infrastructure we will grow the Territory's population, boosting the economy and creating jobs.

"The Darwin water theme park is another piece of our wider plans to boost our business and tourism assets while creating substantial employment opportunities for locals."
