Dastyari's star rises again in the Senate

Labor has promoted Sam Dastyari to deputy opposition whip in the Senate, less than five months after he was stripped of his frontbench positions.

Sam Dastyari is back from political purgatory.

Opposition Senate leader Penny Wong announced on Tuesday the senator would be Labor's new deputy whip in the upper house, less than five months after he was demoted from all frontbench positions.

The ebullient Senator Dastyari found himself in strife in mid-2016 after it was revealed he'd asked a Chinese donor to pay a bill for him.
