Dateline's Yaara Bou Melhem has been awarded the top prize at the Walkley Young Journalist of the year awards.

Yaara picked up the award for her investigation of the democracy movement in Syria, Freedom's Call, which went to air just weeks before protests started to gain pace in the country.

Impressed by Yaara's courage, the judges said she 'took significant personal risks by venturing into Syria and her work has shone a light on the lengths to which the Syrian government would go to silence its critics.'

After the awards, she said she'd be looking at making more reports in the region soon, adding it was an honour to be recognised by her contemporaries.
