David Jones unpacks new gourmet lunch

David Jones has launched its gourmet sandwich bar - with a Neil Perry-designed menu - at its Market Street food hall in Sydney.

A $14 sandwich with salami, proscuitto and smoked ham is among the gourmet creations celebrity chef Neil Perry has helped design for David Jones's latest addition to its food hall - a gourmet sandwich bar.

The Sandwich Bar was unveiled on Wednesday at David Jones's Market Street, Sydney premises as part of the department store's partnership with Mr Perry to reinvigorate its food offering.

Twelve sandwich options, ranging from $10 to $14, include curried egg, a Japanese inspired chicken katsu sandwich and 'The Italian,' a sandwich with five cold meats, including hot sopressa, proscuitto and coppacola.

Mr Perry said the menu is inspired from flavours around the world, including a take on the New York deli sandwich with fried shrimp.

"I've been lucky enough to eat incredible food all over the world and drawing on this we've recreated some of the best flavour combinations to create flavour packed sandwich fillings," Mr Perry said.

Mr Perry, owner of some of Australia's most acclaimed restaurants, including Rockpool , and food consultant to Qantas, signed up with David Jones earlier this year to help with the retailer's food hall revamp.

David Jones currently has four food halls - two in Sydney, one in Perth and another in Melbourne.

The iconic Market Street store has been put up for sale by David Jones' new South African owners Woolworths.

The impending closure in Sydney means the celebrity chef will use the venue to experiment and see what works well.
