David Warner scores nine in CPL opener

David Warner's St Lucia Stars have suffered a 100-run loss to Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League opener, with the opener scoring nine.

David Warner has launched his Caribbean Premier League stint with a single figure contribution to the St Lucia Stars 100-run loss to the Trinbago Knight Riders in Port of Spain.

Warner's stumps were skittled when he misread the length of a delivery from allrounder Javon Searles, a Barbadian who featured in this year's Indian Premier League.

The former Australia vice-captain dropped a catch in the deep when fielding and then stroked one boundary in his innings of nine at Queen's Park Oval, glancing a ball from express paceman Shannon Gabriel to fine leg.

Warner and Steve Smith, who signed up with Barbados as a late replacement for Bangladesh international Shakib Al Hasan, are both taking part in the Twenty20 tournament.

Warner and Smith are both barred from representing Australia, NSW and any Big Bash League franchise during their 12-month bans, which Cricket Australia issued in response to the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal.

Reigning CPL champions Trinbago posted a total of 6-195 in the tournament opener then eased to victory with minimal fuss, much to the delight of coach Simon Katich.

The Brad Hodge-coached St Lucia, who failed to win a single game last year, stumbled to 6-53 and were eventually rolled for 95.

Warner fell during a collapse of 6-18, which included Australian legspinner Fawad Ahmed snagging two wickets in the space of four balls.

Fawad, who was recently dumped from Victoria's contract list, finished with figures of 3-16 from his four overs.

Australian opener Chris Lynn, returning from a shoulder injury that forced him to miss the recent Canadian T20 tournament, scored eight for Trinbago.
